A fresh start: Our new induction experience

Starting a new job can feel like a big step, but at Trafford & Stockport College Group, we want every colleague to feel at home from the very beginning. That’s why the People and Culture Team has completely redeveloped our new starter induction process.

The new programme is all about creating an inclusive, welcoming experience that reflects our college values and reinforces our culture of “a place to belong”. It’s designed to help new colleagues connect with others, learn about the support available, and start their journey with confidence.

So, what’s new?

  • Group welcome events & campus tours – including a relaxed breakfast with members of the Senior Leadership Team, activities to get to know one another, and introductions to our values, People and Culture essentials, safeguarding, and inclusion.
  • Tailored support – with specific inductions for managers and teaching colleagues, plus mentoring and access to key contacts.
  • Protected first week – new teachers and colleagues in student-facing roles won’t be asked to teach or take on direct student duties until they’ve completed their local induction and mandatory training. This ensures they are fully prepared before stepping into the classroom.
  • Your feedback matters – a joiners’ survey at the eight-week mark to give us insight into what’s working and how we can keep improving.

Naomi Harrop, Group Director of People and Culture, said: “Creating an inclusive culture where every colleague feels they belong is at the heart of everything we do. The new induction process has been designed to reflect our values and provide the tools, support and inspiration our people need to thrive. It’s not just about introducing new starters to the organisation; it’s about welcoming them into our community.”

Lisa, who has recently joined TSCG as an Early Years tutor for HE said, “I found the induction process really helpful. I have been given opportunities to go and make relationships across campuses, which has allowed me to make relationships across different teams and see our value of ‘Collaboration’ in action and how it is imbedded into day-to-day life.”

With these changes, we’re confident that every new starter will feel supported, valued, and set up for success right from their very first day with us.
