Celebrating Real-World Learning – Work Experience Round-Up

Work experience is a vital part of the student journey across Trafford and Stockport College Group, giving learners the chance to explore careers, develop hands-on skills, and connect their studies with the working world. From employer-set projects to masterclasses, and hybrid work placements, our learners have embraced a wide range of exciting opportunities designed to build confidence and career-readiness. Here’s a round-up of just some of the incredible experiences that have shaped their growth in recent months.

Employer-set Projects

Students from Stockport College’s Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery course put their craftsmanship to the test by building and delivering bespoke planters and bird boxes to Our Lady’s Primary School in Edgeley. This heartfelt community project was supported by Murphy, who donated the materials as part of their outreach during the Greek Street Roundabout improvements in Stockport. It was a fantastic example of learning, giving back, and creating lasting impact beyond the classroom.

One-Day Masterclasses

Over at Trafford College’s Stretford campus, Level 3 Electrical Installation learners took part in a powerful Industry Masterclass led by Chris Norburn of Cantec Energy. Chris shared his inspiring journey from apprentice to successful business owner before guiding students through practical tasks such as analysing energy data, identifying performance trends, and building a commercial business case. Students left energised by the possibilities of skilled apprenticeships and their potential role in a greener economy.

Later in the month, learners also benefitted from a masterclass and employer-set challenge led by alum Mark Embury, now a senior manager at UK Power Networks. Under Mark’s guidance, students created detailed project documentation for the installation of electric vehicle charging points, tackling timelines, budgets, risk assessments, and resource planning.

Hybrid Work Experience

A highlight of the term was an immersive employer-led work placement with DWP Digital for our Foundation T Level Business students from both the Altrincham and Stockport campuses. Emulating a hybrid work model, students spent a day at the DWP Digital Manchester office and followed up with remote collaboration on four real-world business challenges. Their week culminated in pitching their solutions in a high-pressure “Dragons’ Den”-style presentation to DWP professionals. This brilliant opportunity gave learners a realistic view of digital business, teamwork, and employer expectations—and we’re so grateful to DWP Digital for making it possible.

A Level Work Related Learning Days

In May, Cheadle and Marple campuses hosted vibrant A Level Work Related Learning Days, drawing support from more than 20 employers and higher education partners. From expert-led workshops to interactive sessions, students were given insight into future careers and pathways. We’d like to thank all the organisations involved—especially our partners at Sharp UK—for inspiring our learners and helping them prepare for the exciting road ahead.
