Senior leaders from Trafford & Stockport College Group were invited by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to gain a behind-the-scenes look at the work of their specialist firearms teams.
Hosted at Clayton Brook’s Firearms Training Unit, the visit formed part of GMP’s National Firearms Instructors Course and offered a unique opportunity to learn more about the planning, preparation and execution involved in armed police operations.
Attending on behalf of the College Group were Henry Taylor-Toone (Chief Finance and Operating Officer), Mark Watson (Director of Premises), Natalie Thornborough (Head of Health, Safety and Sustainability), and Matthew Nowell (Estates Team Leader, Cheadle & Marple).
The session included:
- A “show and tell” of armed response vehicles and specialist equipment
- A live demonstration of various weapon systems engaging targets
- Insight into the role and responsibilities of Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs)
The visit also supported the College Group’s close working relationship with GMP, particularly around Business Continuity Planning (BCP), where understanding emergency protocols is essential.
Natalie Thornborough said: “We were honoured to be invited by GMP to gain a deeper understanding of the training and professionalism behind their firearms operations. The visit was incredibly valuable in strengthening our partnership and further enhancing the College Group’s approach to safety, security and emergency planning.” The team described the day as informative and eye-opening, giving them a rare chance to learn directly from those on the front line of high-risk police operations.
