Shaun Deakin graduates from Belong programme studies

Head of Learner Services at The Trafford and Stockport College Group, Shaun Deakin, has been awarded the prestigious Belong Certificate of Graduation, marking the successful completion of his two-year Masters level research project focused on Relational Practice.

Awarded by the Belong Network – a leading organisation committed to social cohesion and inclusion – the certificate recognises Shaun’s dedication to understanding how meaningful relationships between students and professional adults can positively influence educational outcomes.

Shaun’s research has explored the power of connection in education – particularly how trust, respect, and consistent support from adults in professional roles can dramatically impact a student’s sense of belonging, wellbeing, and academic achievement.

“This has been a deeply personal and professionally enriching journey,” Shaun said. “At its heart, my work has been about showing that when students feel seen, heard, and supported by the adults around them, they are far more likely to thrive. Relational practice is not just a theory – it’s a framework for real, lasting impact.”

Throughout the two-year project, Shaun examined best practices in relational engagement, collaborated with staff across the College Group, and reflected on the day-to-day interactions that form the foundation of a supportive learning environment.

James Scott, CEO of Trafford & Stockport College Group, praised Shaun’s achievement:

“Shaun’s commitment to putting students at the centre of everything we do is truly inspiring. His research gives all of us at Trafford and Stockport College Group a deeper understanding of the role we play in helping students feel they belong – not just in the classroom, but in the wider college community.”

The Belong Certificate of Graduation celebrates not just the completion of academic work, but a contribution to a growing movement that seeks to embed relational practice as a core part of education, youth work, and support services.

With this achievement, Shaun hopes to continue championing relational approaches across the College Group and inspire colleagues to see relationships as the cornerstone of student success.
